"Drove farther up the road to find a service station to get ice. Paid cash. The attendant said everyone in Couperville used credit cards or is broke. I said “so they’re broke or more broke.” He laughed. We drove back to the ferry and took a cut-off road to save a few miles – that took us right back to the service station. Had we only known, we would have been back to the ferry much quicker. Drove through Whidbey Island, crossed the bridge at Deception pass, a few miles further north, then headed east on 20. Crossed a mile-long bridge over an estuary, then had about 20 miles of flat terrain. Went an extra 5 to take advantage of it. Ended up just short of Lyman. Decided to drive 50 miles ahead to set up camp at Newhalen, so that we could stay for 2 nights in one spot. Thanks to a leg massage from Linda last night, knee did much better today."
