"The bike shop didin’t open until 10:00, so we had to wait a while to get started. The guy was nice enough to (reluctantly) slime my tube for me. Then he gave me a couple of maps of bike trails to take so that I could stay off the busy highways. Well, I started out okay and then, either I had a Tate’s map (HE WHO HAS A TATE’S IS LOST) or I really read it wrong, because I ended up on a forest foot path that led me in circles. By the time I found my way out of there I was going north when I thought I was going east. I probably cost myself at least a couple of extra miles and a half hour. The final stretch north to Port Townsand had a real steep hill about 2 miles long with very little shoulder and extremely heavy traffic. I was happy to get past that part. We decided to cross on the ferry tonight and camp on Whidbey Island. But we couldn’t get on until the 8:30 ferry so crossed at dusk. (Nearly a 4 hour wait.) We found a campsite a few miles up the road and set up in the dark—but happy not to sleep in the car. Left knee hurts really bad."
